Living with a chronic lung disease can be challenging, but with the right strategies and support, it’s possible to lead a fulfilling and active life. The American Lung Association (ALA) emphasizes that “Whether you are in perfect health, or you are living with a lung condition, there are many things you can do to protect your lungs and maintain your overall health and well-being.”

Get regular exercise

Regular physical activity strengthens respiratory muscles, improves overall endurance, and reduces symptoms like breathlessness. The ALA notes that “people living with lung disease can and should get regular exercise for all the same reasons as everyone else.”

Before starting any exercise regimen, consult with your healthcare provider to develop a plan tailored to your abilities and needs.

Eat healthy foods

A balanced diet supports immune function and maintains energy levels. For individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the ALA recommends consuming “a good source of protein at least twice a day to help maintain strong respiratory muscles.” Incorporate a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins into your meals.

Practice breathing exercises

Breathing exercises can enhance lung efficiency and reduce shortness of breath. Techniques such as pursed-lip breathing and diaphragmatic breathing are particularly beneficial. The ALA provides info and videos on various breathing exercises designed to help manage lung disease symptoms.

Enroll in pulmonary rehabilitation

“Pulmonary rehabilitation has been shown to significantly reduce future hospital admissions, mortality and improve quality of life,” says the ALA. These programs offer structured exercise training, education, and support to help patients improve their lung function, reduce symptoms, and enhance their quality of life.

Protect yourself against respiratory infections

Preventing infections is crucial for those with lung disease. Stay up to date with vaccinations, including those for RSV, influenza, pneumonia, and COVID-19. Regular handwashing and avoiding close contact with individuals who are sick can also reduce the risk of infections.

Join a support group

Connecting with others facing similar challenges can provide emotional support and practical advice. Support groups, either in-person or online, offer a way to share experiences and coping strategies. The ALA offers several support networks for individuals living with lung diseases.
